Do you have some of the same challenges as other professional designers?

7

I called a few of my professional interior designer friends today to ask them what frustrates and causes them the most pain in this business. There were some common themes, and I would bet that many of you are feeling the same way.

We will be conducting a survey for our industry, and we would love for you to participate. If you do, we will share the results with you after we have significant participation. Just sign up for our newsletter to the right of this post and we will send the survey to you.

We will find experts to help address these issues for you, and we will keep you posted about the calendar of events.

Be sure to share this post by clicking on the bookmarks below so we can get as many people participating as possible. Also, as a timesaver, you might want to click on the orange RSS feed button so you are informed when we post a new article.

If you know other interior designers that would be interested in this blog or survey, please refer them and let me know that you sent them to us. We will send you a special report, “Top Ten Challenges for Professional Interior Designers – May 2008.”

Some of the designers I interviewed are interested in developing a private interior design forum for professionals so we can continue this conversation. Please post a comment if you are interested in this type of resource.

We look forward to hearing from you.

I have been an Interior Designer and has owned by firm for over 20 years,,,,,,,,I feel I am at a dead stand still formany reasons…..I do both residential and commercial interiors yet there seems to be no work at all……..I am in NYC and I have belonged to various organizations and networkin groups yet this time it is not working.I have a blog but not a website because I feel it will not make a difference,I have faced east and famine in my business over the years but this time I do not see a light at the end of the tunnel

2009 has been difficult for many designers, and I am so sorry you are one of them. Here's what I am finding – it takes a completely different approach than before. I don't know your specific situation, so it is hard for me to give advice to you. I did check your blog, and I see that it is fairly new. What else are you doing with social media to get your name out? A website won't help, and in fact, I don't recommend one any more. You can do much more with your blog. Tell me more…

I would love a professional forum group…was that ever formed?

It is interesting that you don't recommend a website anymore…that is what I don't have, like Ellen (maybe she has one now), and every connection I make for a new clients wants to see my website. I still think they are highly valuable.

Hi Tracy, we had a decided “lack of response” for a forum. We do have a private Design Success University Facebook page and LinkedIn group. Please join us there.

Hi Tracy, what's interesting is that you don't have to have a traditional website that is created by a web developer. Our website is a WordPress blog that looks like a website. You can send your prospects or clients to your blog. You can't always tell that it is a blog vs. a website depending on your theme. And, you can update the content yourself which is the key to getting more traffic to your site…fresh content on a regular basis with keywords. I hope that answers your question. Even one of our friendly coopetors (competitors) told me she's switching her site to WordPress. She thought I was crazy a few years ago, but now she's joining the bandwagon. It's much less expensive to set up and easier to update. Many, many advantages.
