Interior Design Coaching Tip Of The Week – Igniting Your Passion & Achieving Your Flow State

4

compassBe true to your inner compass and your life will reach a flow state that is unbelievable.

I’ve had several epiphanies or flashes of inspiration in the last few weeks. As I’ve shared them with you, each revelation leads to another level of insight that is truly amazing.

For me, I have to hear a concept a few times (OK…maybe many times) for it to sink in and become part of my life.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the 80/20 rule and how 80% of your results come from 20% of your activities. Although I “know” that, applying it diligently isn’t always so easy. Why is that?

I think it is because we forget to focus on what really ignites passion in us. Why do we lose that connection to our passion?

I think it is because we let negativity, fear and feelings of being overwhelmed take over our thoughts and they poison us.

Let me share a hint of the story with you. On April 19th, my husband shared a Parade article with me about Greensburg, Kansas and how the town was demolished by a tornado two years ago today. I vaguely recalled the story, but the depth of it didn’t register until he mentioned that the anniversary date was May 4th…our wedding anniversary.

Sometimes, there is so much to do that it is easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and then we lose the connection to our soul. These people lost everything, and they decided to rebuild their town as a green city.

The story flipped a switch in my head, and all of a sudden, my emotions were fully engaged and I sent a few emails to some influential people, and I started the week with resolve and determination that I haven’t truly felt at that deep emotional level for quite some time.

I called the Mayor of Greensburg, and toward the end of the end of the conversation, he said that he truly believes that their calling is to inspire others. He even joked that the forefathers had the great foresight to call it “Greensburg.”

I focused on the 20% activities and in just a few days, monumentally huge things happened. I was in the flow, and my passion and emotional energy gave me courage to do things that I couldn’t even believe.

By Friday, April 24th, Erin and I looked at each other in total awe…we knew we had just experienced that “flow” that most top athletes feel and it was intoxicating. Have you felt this?

We are still shaking our heads, and we are also feeling exceedingly grateful for this flip of the switch. What I know is that I want more of that in my life, and there is no doubt in my mind that the power of our thoughts is incredible.

Focus on what you do best and do that first. If you can ignite the passion within you, things will happen easily and effortlessly. Everything becomes easier and more rewarding. Is that enough motivation to find the flow in your own life? I hope so.

Happy Anniversary Harry.

love

Gail, I loved this post and like you have heard the 80/20 rule many times. Though I can say today that providing attention to that 20% is fueling my income right now. I am passionate about my clients and their lifestyles and what I contribute to improve that for them.
I am so grateful to experience their joy and pleasure when a room/project comes together.
Like you say, it’s a huge energy boost. Today I called one of those clients who was so eager to share the pleasure she and her husband have with a home theater project. Plus she immediately focused on the next project.
Thanks for keeping me focused on my passion. And big thanks to you and Erin for this missives!
    Best, Faith

    Hi Faith,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this. I also get “lost in the weeds” from time to time…doing the 80% instead of the 20%. Whenever I do, it feels awkward and “heavy.” This is the time for you to do the “gut check” and ask yourself how you are feeling about what you are doing. If you are feeling frustrated or tense, that is a good signal that you should not do the task, outsource it or delegate it. I’m working on this, too.

I have been applying the 80/20 rule to select clients. Instead of taking them all, I select the 20% and I know that is very little but that also has been helping a lot
I have realized that if I select them better and only focus on the style and the things I like I can get into the flow and o a much better work and they bring me profit and 100% satisfaction on what I am doing.

It is tempting to accept a client when you don't have work
I really had to come to terms to the fact that I cannot make everybody happy and If I take a client that does not resonate with my personality or firm most likely they will not be satisfied with the service

That is fabulous, Alicia. It is so important to be true to yourself and your brand. If you feel uncomfortable in the slightest bit with a prospect, it is always best to decline the job. You're keeping your time available for the right prospects who fit your personality and your services. Keep strong!
