While I was listening I realized that after 20+ years operating my business how much I knew
and how much I put on the side until a more convenient time was available. I have found there is
never a more convenient time. We must continually take the little steps needed on a daily basis
otherwise the actions seem unsurmountable. Design is a Business not a Hobby…we are worth every
dollar and probably more. We should never apoligize for what we charge…we are worth every dollar.
    Too many AHA moments….
Tracking time…essential…will definitely make one better at estimating a flat fee/rate…
Designers should stop devaluing their services, it hurts the profession. It is far better to take out some of the services we are offering to fit the client's budget, reevaluate job …perfect solution…
Another AHA moment is prequalifying groups are well as individuals…ie lawyers, accountants, etc… the extra stress isn't worth it, even at an additional charge. It is far easier and less costly to walk away
    in the beginning.
Definitely need to rethink web site…My laundry list is coming off…
I could go on and on…
    Thanks for a great webinar!

Love what you do or find something else to do.
    Thanks for a great webinar.

Hi Alex, you certainly took good notes! This is a common thread even from the most experienced designers. I am on a mission to help people make the changes that will create profit, security and less stress. We all need to remember that if you do the hard things first, everything else is easy and the reverse is also true. Learning new methods is much better than repeating old techniques that are no longer valid. And, as you said, doing small things first cuts the feeling of overwhelm. The important thing is to make a decision to make a change. Thanks so much for your comments.

One of the biggest AHAs is just changing our mentality of the design business and learning that we need to use avenues that work, rather than the way it's always been done in our industry. I have been using some of your fee based techniques in a “customized” way that has worked for me in the past, but I realize that I need to keep tweaking to use effectively. THANKS Gail for keeping us in the here and now as well as for future reference to better ourselves and our business!

Hi Cumby, here is my big mission…to get designers to wake up to the fact that the industry is forever changed. We can't continue with our old methods…it ensures failure. It's time to play where the puck is going to be (Wayne Gretzky). Thank you for understanding the message.

After doing most of the webinars, I decided to move to the value based fee option. I've been on my own for about 12 yrs and figured I could do it w/o too much pain. However, I've recently relocated to another state, and had my first interview with a potential client this week. My question is this…do I treat this as a learning curve client? Although I have set up my accounts at the local design center, and have kept my vendor accts active, etc., I am still not very familiar with the area, and do not have my “posse” in place yet. I feel as though anything I do is going to take me twice as long as previously…it's not the client's fault, they know I am new to the Austin area, but seemed to like the info I gave them during the interview, and are looking for some feedback from me as far as fees. I know what I would have set as my fees before I relocated, but feel a bit lost now. Just wondering if you have any ideas on how I should handle this?

You won't ever do it perfectly, so just jump in based on your experience and create fee options based on your previous location. Yes…keep the scope small and get a win under your belt and then expand from there. You're absolutely right, you can't charge your client for the learning time. I hope that helps!
