I hear interior designers complain that they have no business, but when I talk with them about what’s going on it’s clear they aren’t taking the necessary steps to grow their businesses.  Often it’s because they are reluctant to do things they find unpleasant or to try approaches they aren’t familiar with. The truth is, they are holding themselves back from being successful.
As the saying goes, no pain, no gain. Change is uncomfortable for many people, and it is also the reason they never achieve great things. Â The only way you break through barriers and accomplish more than most people is to do things that others are unwilling to do, find hard to do, or are afraid to do.
Why are you afraid of trying something new?  Are you concerned that you won’t do it perfectly, that you will be ridiculed or embarrassed, that you won’t like it, that it won’t be easy, that you won’t be good at it?  If you don’t have these concerns, then it means you aren’t pushing yourself enough.
What can you do to push through your fears or concerns?  Remember that the benefit of doing something you’ve never done could open doors to something few people will ever experience.  The excitement of achieving something you’ve never done before can far outweigh the trepidation. Every mountain seems unscalable until you reach the top.
What you really have to do is face down or ignore your fear and go ahead and do it anyway. Another helpful technique I’ve discovered is to break an unpleasant or dreaded task into manageable and achievable steps. Write down your “big goal†and then jot down what you need to do to accomplish it.  What is the first step you must take?  Is it research?  Schedule it on your calendar.  Is it a phone call?  Find out who to contact, write bullet points of what you want to discuss, and schedule the phone call on your calendar. When you commit to performing the steps, you’re more likely to follow through on your goal and accomplish great things.
Growth is a progression, and success comes from growth. You weren’t perfect the first time you tried design. Nearly any really successful person will tell you they got where they are today by failing over and over again, and learning from their failures. The sure fire way to get nowhere is to do nothing.
What is one thing you could start doing today that would begin to grow your business? Your checkbook balance is the result of how many relationships you have built.  If it is scraping bottom, you don’t know enough people or the right people, or you don’t know how to get them to refer you.  Or, when you do get that referral, you may not feel confident that you can land that project.  Which one is it for you? And why is it? You have the power to change that, if you’re willing to move outside your comfort zone.
